The world's largest olive oil company, Deoleo, is declaring a new era for the market, one that has been marked by unprecedented volatility. This shift is largely attributed to favorable rainfall trends in major producing nations, including Spain, which has led to a solid global yield for the upcoming harvest. The company's CEO, Cristóbal Valdés, states that the highly complex market cycle experienced between 2022 and 2024, which had a severe yet temporary impact on the industry, is now definitively behind us.
However, this optimism is not without its challenges. Analysts continue to raise concerns about the prospect of global olive oil supplies swinging dramatically from one season to the next. Climate change, water scarcity, and pest and disease pressures persist, posing significant threats to the industry. Deoleo itself previously described the three-year window from 2022 to 2024 as one of the most challenging periods in the sector's history, with severe droughts and searing heat across vast swathes of southern Europe destroying large parts of the olive oil harvest.
Despite these challenges, Deoleo's sales volumes have improved across key markets, and the number of olive oil purchasing households in the U.S. has consistently increased across all income brackets. The company credits a packaging redesign with helping to boost U.S. sales, highlighting the importance of consumer-focused innovation in expanding market share. Valdés notes that the primary market driver is innovation tailored to modern culinary habits, especially for younger consumers and those discovering the benefits of olive oil for the first time.
The rise of functional, value-added packaging, such as squeeze formats, is already driving 40% of the entire category's growth in the country, according to Valdés. This shift in packaging is a clear reflection of the changing preferences of younger consumers and those new to the benefits of olive oil. As the market stabilizes and consumer demand recovers, Deoleo is poised to capitalize on these trends and maintain its position as a global leader in the olive oil industry.
